Abstract

Educational differentials by region and by gender among the Brazilian population are considerable. This is partially due to the different probabilities of access to the school system, at different ages, as well as the probability of dropping out. This paper measures and describes the proportion of population that achieved a certain grade level (first, fourth, fifth and eight grades) in two socioeconomically different states in Brazil (Ceará and Rio de Janeiro) in 1996 (the latest available data for census information). Moreover, temporal evolution of the maximium levels of approval and admission in the various grades are measured and discussed for the two states.
