REDISCOVERING BRAZIL: A JOURNEY TO THE DEMOGRAPHY OF GIORGIO MORTARA

Abstract

This paper was written by request of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP), to be included in a book specially published to celebrate the birth centenary of Giorgio Mortara commemorated during the 20th General IUSSP Conference in Florence, 1985. Mortara, who spent 28 years in Brazil (1939-67), bequeathed a vast contribution to the demography of the Brazilian population. The paper deals with the most significant aspects of Mortara's work in this field. In this sense, we believe all those angaged in population studies in Brazil associate themselves with this much-deserved tribute to Professor Mortara through the opportunity here presented.
