Abstract

In the past it has been always difficult to assess adults' lethality. Marriage records, however, have long mentioned the names of marrying couples' parents and indicate whether they were living or dead at the time of such marriages. So, based upon information on the incidence of orphanage according to the age of individuals being married it has been feasible to study the relationship between adults' lethality and the ratio of orphans at the time of marriage. This article considers the lethality of adults from data on orphan brides and bridegrooms in France during the period 1740 to 1829. The analysis emphasizes the importance of the quality of data and indirect procedures used to obtain representative indings.
