Abstract

Evaluation of the Policy of Production, Processing and Distribution of information in Brazil. The article discusses the reasons which led ABEP to dedicate a Plenary Session to this theme at the VII National Meeting of Population Studies; the choice of topics is also discussed. Two of the papers presented the outlines of a proposed National System of Social lnformation and two discussed more specific topics: the production and distribution of population and labor market statistics in Brazil. Finally, three examples which show the urgent need to rethink and redefine the role and functioning of our central statistical office are identified: the non-Census of 1990; the non-publication of the results of the PNAD suplements of 1984 and 1986 on schedule; the discount of Brazilian population estimates for 1990 and 1991.
