Abstract
The São Paulo Labor Force: a critical analysis of data sources. PNAD is a privileged source of data for labor force analysis in view of two of its aspects: universal coverage, when most other sources cover only subsets of the labor force, and yearly periodicity, when the census happens once every ten years. It is therefore necessary to look a little more closely into the question of the quality of the data PNAD produces. Data evaluation is therefore the first: purpose of this paper. A second purpose is to trace the recent evolution of the labor force in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, in its main characteristics. This is done separately for the sexes, for the period 1971-88. For reasons discussed in the text, participation rates are more acceptable than absolute data. These rates show a definitive increase from the beginning to the end of the period covered for women in most age groups and all types of relationship to the household head (marital status data are not presented). Data on schooling, unemployment, sectorial distribution, hours of work are also analyzed.Downloads
