Abstract
Regional characteristics of the aged in Brazil. The issue of elderly persons in Brazil is a theme addressed by population specialists, who generally note that the Brazilian population is ageing in a context where several social problems remain unsolved. The analysis at the macro level sometimes hides regional, ethnic, gender or socioeconomic differentials. Specific issues in the dynamics and behaviour of elderly persons in different regional contexts can be misinterpreted when analyzing only global data. Spatial distribution of a population subgroup is the output of interaction among the components of demographic dynamics: fertility, mortality and migration. This paper con¬siders several aspects of the elderly regional distribution: its evolution, gender and ethnic characteristics, living arrangements and socioeconomic status. Data sources used include results of the 1960, 1970 and 1980 Demographic Censuses, the 1985 and 1990 National Household Surveys and Preliminary Results of the 1991 Demographic Census.Downloads
