Abstract

Demographic History in Brazil: contributions to Brazilian Historiography. The purpose of the article is to present a survey of the advances achieved by Demographic History in Brazil. Adopting a comprehensive definition for Demographic History, it is observed that the studies undertaken in the area since the early 70s' largely transcended the demographic element stricto sensu, and had positive effects in terms of the recent development of Brazilian historiography. Privileging a thematic approach, some of the cited WOrKS were selected, and it is made patent that Demographic History has unmistakably given an enormous contribution to the knowledge of economy and society of Brazil in former times, by means of intruding incisivelly - and above all usefully - upon a vast thematic universe.
