Abstract

Based on a century of data series of vital statistics for the State of São Paulo, beggining at the end of the 19th century, the article aims to study the impact of the international migration to the State of São Paulo on the evolution of the State population. It analysis the demographic effects of the migratory streams on the population growth; on the sex ratio and nupciality; on natality and fertility including maternal deaths and sexually transmitted diseases. Along with these aspects, it relates migration and public health problems, foccusing the main endemies, the public health services and mortality. In the conclusion it also points out some issues that appear in contemporary society.
