Abstract

The main objective of this paper is to call attention to the extraordinaire analytical possibilities provided by Brazilian census data on internal migration. The 1991 Brazilian Demographic Census and the 1996 Brazilian Population Enumeration included a question on the place of residence five years prior to the census. The paper shows how to combine these informations with the indirect estimate of decennial net migration in order to estimate the 1986 regional population and the 1981-86 net migration.
