Abstract

The article analyses the relations between the relative size of population in school age and the quantity and quality of the fundamental teaching in Brazil, through a Brazilian municipalities cross-section analyses concern to 1991, using as a methodological base the Schultz work (1987). In this sense, is made an evaluation if the fecundity fall, changing the dependency rate, result in a positive impact on the quality and quantity of the Brazilian education system. The article also developes a state and municipalities descriptive analysis, considering some educational indicators, making it possible to study the indicator’s particularities. The basic conclusion was that a fecundity fall, and the consequent reduction in the proportion of young population, would bring some positive impacts on the educational system, resulting in the increasing public teaching offer as well as its quality.
