Abstract

In the period characterized by the transition from slave to free labor and by the expansion of the coffee plantations, several attempts were made to count the population at that time and obtain more accurate statistics for the then Province (now State) of São Paulo, Brazil. Three of these attempts, namely, the regional censuses of 1836, 1854/55, and 1886 were published. The present study aims at analyzing the contents of these censuses, the thinking of government authorities and those appointed to perform them, the benefits and difficulties related to them.
