Abstract

In studying the growth of the Village of Campinas during the early 19th century, one can see the importance of the migratory process in the settlement of the town. Using the lists of names of inhabitants for the years 1814 and 1829, some relationships were established between the place of birth of the heads of household and other parameters, such as their occupation and color, indicating a process of social and spatial mobility in the constitution of the area known as the “Old West of the Province of São Paulo”.
