Abstract
This article discusses the effects of changes in age structure on the labor market of youth in Brazil. Using the PME, a pseudo-panel was set up to group data regarding six metropolitan regions between 1982 to 2000. Through regression models it was possible to measure the elasticity of employment and unemployment among youth, taking into account the influence of factors related to the aggregate demand, the region, and the periods considered. The results obtained indicate that unemployment and employment rates for women and youth (ages 15-19) are the most sensitive to relative increases in population. It was also confirmed that improvements in the aggregate labor market still provide the best means for reducing unemployment rates.Downloads
