Abstract
Using data from the 1999 Brazilian National Household Sample Survey (PNAD/IBGE), this article paper investigates the individual and family characteristics of children and adolescents aged 5 to 17 who live in the southeastern and the northeastern regions of Brazil regarding occupational choices. The options considered were: working only, studying only, both working studying, and neither. All estimations necessary for the study incorporated the PNAD sample design. We found that the occupational behavior of the children/adolescents is related to their living conditions and level of poverty. The less educated the mothers, the more likely are the children/adolescents to drop out of school. Children living in the northeastern region have a higher probability of both studying and working simultaneously, whereas in the southeastern region they are more likely to be unemployed work.Downloads
