The 2022 Demographic Census reveals an accelerated demographic transition in Brazil, marked by declining fertility, changes in age structure, and slower population growth. Between 2010 and 2022, many municipalities experienced reduced growth, and some registered a change in population trends.
These shifts, combined with economic, social, and climatic disparities, increase the demand for reliable municipal population projections. In Brazil, the AiBi method is commonly used, yet its accuracy remains unmeasured. This study estimates the uncertainty of municipal projections by sex, integrating the random walk with drift method with the AiBi point projections. The methodology was applied to municipalities in Rio Grande do Norte and São Paulo, which differ in data quality and socioeconomic conditions.
Results show that uncertainty varies with population size, stability of past trends, and projection horizon, being greater in smaller municipalities, in areas with volatile growth patterns, and in long-term projections.
