Abstract

The effects of unemployment and the restructuring of production can be seen in the structures of families in the São Paulo Metropolitan Region. Families have been obliged to rearrange insertion of their members in the labour market in ways that do not always enable them to maintain their previous wage levels (Montali, 2000 and 2002). The rates of participation occupation of male heads of families and their children have fallen, while occupation, women, especially wives, have risen, a fact that represents new arrangements in the moments in the life cycles of families. In this regard, and considering the continuity processes of deterioration of the labour market since 2000, this article discusses the which unemployment and the precarization of work weaken the forms that families guarantee their survival. The results show processes similar to those seen in studies large Latin-American cities.
