NOTES ON ESTIMATION OF NET MIGRATION OF BRAZILIANS IN BRAZIL FROM DEMOGRAPHIC CENSUS

This paper adapts the residual method for estimating the contribution of net migration to the overall variation in the stock of Brazilians within the Brazilian territory. To this end, data from the 2000 and 2010 population censuses were used to capture both the direct effect of migration on Brazilians and the indirect effect on the generation of native Brazilians, from both Brazilian and foreign mothers. The results show that international migration had a limited impact on the variation in the stock of Brazilians during the intercensal period, in line with findings from other studies. At the same time, the paper points to the potential for applying this method to the period between 2010 and 2022, once the nationality and place of birth data from the 2022 Census become available. This would enable a more precise analysis of migration balances and the impact of migration on the Brazilian population, with important implications for policies supporting Brazilians abroad, particularly in the context of increasing international conflicts.
