Abstract

The article consists of a critical reflection on Brazilian historical demography and the history of population in Brazil. The authors discuss issues related to the definition and limits of historical demography and of the history of population, as well as to sources, methods and choice of specific periods and spaces for analyses. Attention was also directed to an analysis of important recent literature in the area and indicates the lack of specific demographic analyses. Finally, the article suggests proposals for the future of historical demography in Brazil.
